Gene Arnold Hines

Gene Arnold Hines, 92, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2019 at Pioneer Health and Rehab in Prairie Farm.  He was born on November 21, 1926 in Cumberland to Boyd and Ruth (Hilton) Hines.  Gene was baptized on March 2, 1927 at the Cumberland United Methodist Church and confirmed on April 9, 1939.  
His mother died when he was a young boy and his father was remarried to Helen Johnson.  Gene graduated from Cumberland High School and attended UW Madison until he enlisted in the Army.  In service to his country he was decorated with the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal, and an Army of Occupation Medal for his service in Japan and Korea.  
He married Delpha Delores Duncan on July 29, 1951 at the Cumberland United Methodist Church and they were blessed with three children.  He was employed by 3M Cumberland for 32 years and retired on September 1, 1982.  Delpha unexpectedly died on September 3, 1998.  Gene spent the remainder of his life with his loving companion Betty Solum by his side.  He enjoyed hunting, bowling, playing cards, and watching the Badgers, Packers, and Brewers.  Gene was a member of American Legion Post 98 and VFW Post 6769.  On June 6, 2015 he took his Northland Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
Gene is survived by his special companion Betty Solum of Cumberland; his son, Steve (Laurie) Hines of Almena; daughter, Karen (Hines) Miller of Cumberland; son, Paul (June) Hines of Clayton; five  grandchildren, Shane Miller, Joshua Miller, Adam (Ashli) Hines, Nathan Hines, and Emillie Hines; two great grandchildren, Sophia and Adalynn; his sister, Phyllis (Roger) Harrison of Brainard, MN; two brothers, Ben (Edna) Hines of Cumberland, and Jim (Jackie) Hines of Schafer, MN and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Delpha, father Boyd, mother Ruth, step-mother Helen, brother Bruce (Esther) Hines, and sister Barbara (Jerry) Tempesta.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 3, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Lakeside Cemetery in Cumberland with the Rev. Greg Becker officiating and full military honors by Cumberland American Legion Post 98.
