The Cumberland Girls Basketball team grabbed their first victory of the year with a 44-39 victory over the Webster Tigers last Tuesday in Webster. Cumberland led 25-20 at halftime and held on for an exciting victory. “We broke the press, played good defense, and moved the ball on offense,” said Coaches Hillary Zimmer and Corey Chilson. Senior Joey Carlson played with a lot of heart and determination and led Cumberland with 14 points in the contest. Lauren Green added nine points and Hannah Delzer four points and six big steals. “Were very happy for the girls,” added the coaches.

Friday, the girls dropped a 47-32 Parent’s Night decision to the Barron Bears. “We played good defense and showed improvement after losing to them by 36 points back on January 6,” said Coach Zimmer. The team celebrated senior Joey Carlson in the pregame. “She has been a great leader for us,” added Chilson. Adreanna Johnson led Cumberland with eight points, while Lauren Green added seven points and four rebounds. The team opened up WIAA Tournament play on Tuesday at Grantsburg. A victory there would likely send them to Abbotsford on Friday night for a second round game.
